WHITEFIELD, David Gerald - May  20, 1931 –August  20, 2007.
David Gerald Whitefield, educator, husband, father, Scot, passed away peacefully thanks to the care of Unit 102 at the Foothills Medical Centre on Monday, August 20, 2007 after a long illness at the age of 76 years.  David was born in Glasgow and educated at Oxford University.  He came to Calgary with his family in 1967.  His working life was marked by achievements as a scholar and especially as a teacher of history for thirty years at the University of Calgary.  More than a narrow researcher, he exemplified the ideal of the politically engaged academic.  He leaves behind in those who knew him an intellectual vision and an example of fighting spirit that lasted to the very end.  Tragically, he lived to see the death of his youngest son, James.  He is survived and sadly missed by his wife of fifty-one years, Isabel, daughter Ishbel, two sons Stephen and Jeremy,  and numerous relatives in the United Kingdom.  His family invites his friends, students, colleagues, and comrades to remember David Whitefield at a Memorial Service, which will be held at Glencoe Club (636 – 29 Avenue, S.W.) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m.  Forward condolences through In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Calgary  Health Trust – Unit 102, for patient comfort,  Suite 800, 11012 Macleod Trail, S.E., Calgary, AB  T2J 6A5 (Telephone 403-943-0615,  Arrangements  in care of McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES,  Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE, N.W.  Telephone 403-241-0044.
